LEARNING AND HUMAN UNDERSTANDING

 LIFE IS LEARNING

Learning concept in the light of the opinions of behaviorists, connectivity, and humanists. Understanding is merely seeing relationship or patterns and applications require not more than the transfer of training. According to the humanists, learning is a personal act of an individual to fully utilize his potential. It is essential that instructional activities should be based on the learners’ basic needs for the success of the learning process. In this article, I'm going to talk about learning, knowledge, type of knowledge, perception, Epistemology and passion.

INTRODUCTION

Learning has been defined by educational psychologists in different ways and meanings. It has been explained as a quantitative increase in knowledge, memorizing of facts, skills, and methods that can be retained and used as necessary. We start learning at birth. The processes of human learning, and lifelong learning is replacing the term lifelong education. In addition to those basic human activities, our brain is overwhelmed by other things and tasks that need to be learned. Learning is an integral component of being human. Human beings do two things very well survive and learn.

LEARNING

Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. In traditionally, research and studies around learning focused primarily on the early years of learning through childhood and adolescence. However, it is now recognized that learning is a continuous process that commences at birth and continues until death. It is the process through which we use our experience to deal with new situations and to develop relationships.

What is Knowledge?

Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, skills, or objects. The most accounts, knowledge can be acquired in many different ways and from many sources including but not limited to perception, reason, memory, testimony, scientific inquiry, education, and practice. It is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts (descriptive knowledge), skills (procedural knowledge), or objects (acquaintance knowledge).

Type of knowledge

Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or there are 4 types of knowledge,

(1) factual knowledge, (2)conceptual knowledge, (3) procedural knowledge, and (4)metacognitive knowledge.

  • Factual knowledge: - Factual knowledge simply as the terminologies, specific details, and basic elements within any domain. This is the information that can and must be learned through exposure, repetition, and commitment to memory.

  • Conceptual knowledge: -Conceptual knowledge can be understood as knowing the interrelationships and functions among the details and elements that make up a larger structure. Basically, it is knowing that facts can be organized in meaningful ways.

  • Procedural knowledge: -Procedural knowledge type is critical for success in goal attainment because it puts the “what” into action through the “how” process. Procedural knowledge can be understood as knowledge of,

    1. Subject-specific skills and algorithms
    2. Subject-specific techniques and methods
    3. Criteria for deciding when to use the right procedures.

  • Metacognitive knowledge:-Metacognitive knowledge probably the least paid attention to knowledge type because sometimes it feels uncomfortable to reflect on what is happening inside your world. Metacognitive knowledge can be understood as,

    1. Strategic knowledge
    2. Knowledge about cognitive tasks
    3. Self knowledge

What is Understanding?

Understanding is a psychological process related to an abstract or physical object, such as a person, situation, or message whereby one is able to use concepts to model that object. Understanding is a relation between the knower and an object of understanding. Understanding implies abilities and dispositions with respect to an object of knowledge that is sufficient to support intelligent behavior.

Brain

The human brain is the central organ of the human nervous system, and the spinal cord makes up the central nervous system. The brain consists of the cerebrum, the brainstem, and the cerebellum. It controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating, and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body. The cerebrum, the large, outer part of the brain, controls reading, thinking, learning, speech, emotions, and planned muscle movements like walking. It also controls vision, hearing, and other senses.

How does the brain influence learning?

Learning is a physical process in which new knowledge is represented by new brain cell connections. The strength and formation of these connections are facilitated by chemicals in the brain called growth factors. Nature and nurture affect the learning brain.

Why Important Exercise For Learning?

Exercise and learning go hand in hand. Physical activity not only facilitates the birth of new brain cells, it also produces smart chemicals that promote learning. Find out how you can reap the benefits when you keep your body and brain healthy. The More Your Body Exercises, the Better Your Brain Functions. Exercise improves learning on three levels.
  • It optimizes your mindset to improve alertness, attention, and motivation
  • It prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information
  • It spurs the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus.
In short, not only does exercise help the brain get ready to learn but it actually makes retaining information easier.

PERCEPTION

Perception is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the presented information or environment. All perception involves signals that go through the nervous system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of the sensory system. Perception is the process by which people categorize objects along dimensions of importance. Perception plays a very important role in the determination of individual behavior. It is simply the process or way to understand any object or event. It differs with individuals.

The Element and Basic Kinds of Perception

Perception includes the five senses. There are touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste. It also includes what is known as proprioception, a set of senses involving the ability to detect changes in body positions and movements.

EPISTEMOLOGY

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that ask questions about knowledge and understanding. Epistemologists study the nature, origin, and scope of knowledge, epistemic justification the rationality of belief and various related issues. It is concerned with the mind’s relation to reality.

Why is Epistemology important?

  • Epistemology is the explanation of how we think.
  • Without epistemology, we could not think.
  • Distinguish truth from error.
  • Consequences are obvious.
  • Flaws in epistemology will make it harder to accomplish anything.

What are the key elements of a proper Epistemology?

  • Valid- Our senses are valid, and the only way to gain information about the world.
  • Reason-  It is our method of gaining knowledge, and acquiring understanding.
  • Logic- It is our method of maintaining consistency within our set of knowledge.
  • Objectivity- It is our means of associating knowledge with reality to determine its validity.
  • Concepts- They are abstracts of specific details of reality, or of other abstractions.

PASSION

Passion is any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate. Passion is not enough to say I know something or I'm good at something. Passion has to be based on a firm grounding of understanding. Passion is engrained in your body and soul. When you are really happy doing something, there's a hint of what you are passionate about right there. One of the reasons defining passion is so different from one man to another, is because sometimes it is hard to pin down what your real passion is.

- Albert Einstein-

Learning has been defined as a quantitative increase in knowledge, memorizing of facts, skills, and methods, abstracting meaning, relating parts of the subject matter to each other and to the real world. It is also defined as adjustment, or adaptation to a situation or improvement. The changes induced by learning often last a lifetime. Many experiences in life provide us with learning opportunities from which we can choose whether or not to learn.
